A regenerative board material that replaces particle boards 1:1 — and paves the way for a sustainable furniture and construction industry.

In 2021, the global turnover of particle boards was approximately 150 billion DKK, growing towards around 190 billion DKK in 2027. A particle board consists of 6–10% glue, emits approximately 16 kg CO₂-eq/m³, and is 0% compostable.

SLETH, Søren Jensen and Horn is working to replace the particle board 1:1 with a biogenic construction material, the Hyphen Board, and potentially shift a massive market and make an equally massive difference for the environment.

The Hyphen Board, which consists of 50% mycelium and 50% organic substrate made from local agricultural waste materials (sawdust, rapeseed, flax, hemp, and similar), is 100% compostable and emits 0 kg CO₂-eq/m³.

The first phase of the development project targets the furniture and interior industry, such as tabletops and cabinets. The second phase explores the potential of using the Hyphen Board as a construction panel and thereby replacing CO₂-heavy materials in the building industry.

The development project is a collaboration between Horn Bordplader, Søren Jensen Rådgivende Ingeniørfirma og SLETH.
